Perinatal obsessive-compulsive disorder is more common than most realize, yet there is very limited research on the disorder. The lack of information around POCD is problematic and can have detrimental consequences. This course will equip the student with knowledge and tools to differentiate POCD from other perinatal disorders like anxiety, depression and psychosis. The student will learn about the statistics of POCD, possible risks and causes, and specific OCD themes that show up in pregnancy and postpartum. Students will learn which tools are best to use to assess and the challenges around assessing for POCD and the impacts of mis or under diagnosing. There will be case examples and education on treatment planning.
Quick Facts:
1. Aggressive obsessions are more common in perinatal OCD vs non-perinatal OCD.
2. Misdiagnosing and under-diagnosing perinatal OCD can lead to negative consequences for parent and baby.
3. Major depression is the most common co-occurring disorder with perinatal OCD.
4. Many with perinatal OCD feel shame around sharing they are having scary thoughts and avoid getting help.
